We seem to be in some sort of mud season as this gets written! Our farm is growing- we’re renting at least five more acres this year, but may negotiate an extra 15. (This flyer has been put off hoping to make the announcement….but it hasn’t happened yet). We’ve got a great full time employee lined up, some helpful equipment purchases, and seeds ready to be planted.
We’ve raised our meat prices- our feed costs have gone up well over 80% this year and we need to cover that. The heritage turkeys in particular have been problematic. We’re setting the prices at our bare minimum– our profit covers the cost to raise a few chickens for our family but not any hourly pay! All of our livestock receives a mixture of certified organic and transitional organic feed. We’re not getting the animals certified since we’ve added new land, and won’t have a high enough percentage of certified feed for several years.
Turkeys will again be available fresh this year– we managed to arrange a processing date the week of the holidays. Let us know if you would take two smaller birds in place of one bigger one- we seem to get mainly orders for the giant guys.
Egg shares will be around one dozen per week, possibly more in Spring. Goat milk shares are for one quart per week. The eggs shares are currently sold out, but we have new hens that should start laying in June, so call to make arrangements if you’d like a partial season share.
We are considering a meat brokers license so that we can sell individual cuts of meat. Let us know if this would interest you.
This year we’re offering a baked good share. These will be done by Stewart Pequignot. Details have not been completely worked out. We’d like feedback from customers– things like: should desserts be included, only whole grains, no whole grains...whatever. He’s flexible.
This year we are again offering a full season CSA. It will run 25 weeks, beginning mid-May. The cost is $15 per week. We will also have a flower share available which runs 21 weeks. All of our produce and flowers are certified organic this year. Due to demand, we can make arrangements for half season shares for those that have sauce gardens or prefer spring greens. Full season half shares include the same things as full shares, but in smaller quantity. Many folks ask what size share to get– that’s a tough answer. Most people get a full share, and larger families or big veggie eaters supplement at the Saturday Farmers Markets.
For those that don’t know, CSA stands for community supported agriculture. Customers purchase shares in the farm, and in return receive a basketful of produce each week, picked fresh that day. You share all the rewards and some of the risks of the season. In general though, shares include slightly more produce than you’d get at the farmer’s market for the money. See our crop list online for ideas of what you might receive. CSA pick up times are Tuesday between 4 and 7 PM on our farm. Pick up in C-U will be between 4:30 and 6:30. These times might vary slightly due to after school activities, we’ll let you know before the season starts. Let us know if you’d like to carpool with someone near you or trade pickups.
